EU Safety Gate published five serious recalls on hobby and sports equipment for phthalates on October 2, 2026, notified by Sweden, Finland and Latvia under the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. The alerts cover a Tunturi pedal exerciser rejected at the Finnish border, an enerofit dumbbell recalled in Latvia, and a yoga ball set, an exercise ball and a yoga ball withdrawn from the Swedish market, with plastic components carrying DEHP, DIBP and DBP at up to 41.94% by weight.
EU importers, distributors, retailers and online marketplaces of fitness and yoga equipment must immediately check stock and online listings against the five alerted products, obtain supplier phthalate and SCCP test reports for plastic components, and verify technical files and REACH Annex XVII conformity, or face withdrawal from the EU market, recall from end users, import rejection at the border and national penalties under REACH.

The pattern
The five alerts all cite phthalates in plastic components: DEHP at 14% by weight in the foot straps of the Tunturi pedal exerciser and 15.4% in the red plastic of the enerofit dumbbell, DIBP at 0.15% and 37.83% across the Swedish yoga ball set and exercise ball, and DBP at up to 41.94% plus short-chain chlorinated paraffins at 0.62% in the yoga ball flagged for both chemical and environmental risk. All five alerts cite the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, and the yoga ball alert also cites the Persistent Organic Pollutants Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 for the SCCP content.
Two products originate in the People's Republic of China and three have an unknown origin; Sweden notified three alerts, Finland and Latvia one each. The wave points to imported plastic fitness goods, but no common supplier or official campaign underpins the five alerts, so no root cause is asserted.
Who is exposed
EU importers of hobby and sports equipment sourced from China, EU distributors and retailers of fitness and yoga equipment, and EU online marketplaces listing third-party fitness imports are directly exposed, because the obligations under REACH Annex XVII and the Market Surveillance Regulation attach to whoever places the non-compliant article on the EU market. The alerted brands Tunturi (notified by Finland) and enerofit (notified by Latvia) are named in the alerts; unbranded importers carry the same liability when their supplier cannot prove conformity.
What to check now
- Check stock and online listings against the five alerted products and remove matching pedal exercisers, yoga balls, exercise balls and dumbbells.
- Obtain supplier phthalate (DEHP, DIBP, DBP) test reports for plastic components of fitness and yoga equipment.
- Obtain supplier SCCP test reports for plastic components, the yoga ball alert citing the POPs Regulation.
- Verify the technical file and REACH Annex XVII conformity documentation for imported fitness equipment batches.
- Trace the supplier and country of origin for unbranded equipment, two of the five alerted products originating in the People's Republic of China.
- Notify the national market-surveillance authority and withdraw any recalled product found in stock under the REACH penalty regime.
Continuous per-jurisdiction monitoring with Obsidian surfaces a phthalate recall wave the moment the alerts publish, before a national authority reaches the importer's stock.
