EU Safety Gate published six serious jewellery alerts between 25 September and 2 October 2026, four for cadmium measured at 9.5%, 19%, 37% and 77% by weight and two for nickel release measured at 9.01 and 29 µg/cm²/week. The alerts, notified by Sweden, Finland, France and Germany under the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, cover earrings, bracelets and piercing jewellery, four of them originating in the People's Republic of China.
EU importers, distributors, retailers and online marketplaces of fashion and piercing jewellery must immediately check stock and online listings against the six alerted products and obtain supplier cadmium and nickel-release test reports verifying REACH Annex XVII conformity, or face recall from end users, withdrawal from the market, corrective measures ordered by national market-surveillance authorities and REACH non-compliance penalties under the Member State penalty regime.

The pattern
Four of the six alerts measured cadmium concentrations of 9.5%, 19%, 37% and 77% by weight, against the REACH Annex XVII Entry 23 limit of 0.01% by weight for cadmium in jewellery, hundreds to thousands of times the permitted maximum. The two remaining alerts measured nickel release at 9.01 and 29 µg/cm²/week in earrings in prolonged skin contact. All six alerts cite the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for non-compliance.
Four of the six products originate in the People's Republic of China and two have an unknown origin; Sweden notified three alerts, Finland, France and Germany one each. The wave tracks the persistent influx of cheap fashion and piercing jewellery sold into the EU through online marketplaces, the recurring root cause the Safety Gate data and the REACH committee records identify for cadmium and nickel jewellery non-compliance.
Who is exposed
EU importers of fashion and piercing jewellery sourced from China, EU retailers and distributors of costume jewellery (earrings, bracelets, piercing jewellery), and EU online marketplaces listing third-party jewellery imports are directly exposed, because the obligations under REACH Annex XVII and the Market Surveillance Regulation attach to whoever places the non-compliant article on the EU market. The alerted brands Amanda B (notified by Finland) and XUPING JEWELRY (notified by Germany) are named in the alerts; unbranded importers carry the same liability when their supplier cannot prove conformity.
What to check now
- Check stock and online listings against the six alerted products and remove matching earrings, bracelets and piercing jewellery from sale.
- Obtain supplier cadmium test reports verifying the REACH Annex XVII Entry 23 limit of 0.01% by weight for each jewellery SKU.
- Obtain supplier nickel-release test reports for earrings and piercing jewellery in prolonged skin contact.
- Verify the conformity documentation (test certificates and EU declaration of conformity) for imported jewellery batches.
- Trace the supplier and country of origin for unbranded jewellery, four of the six alerted products originating in the People's Republic of China.
- Notify the national market-surveillance authority and withdraw any recalled product found in stock under the REACH penalty regime.
Continuous per-jurisdiction monitoring with Obsidian surfaces a cadmium or nickel jewellery wave the moment the alerts publish, before a national authority reaches the importer's stock.
