On October 2, 2026, EU Safety Gate recorded 9 serious alerts, all notified by Hungary, on lighting chains and decorative lighting with an electric-shock hazard. Seven products originate in the People's Republic of China and two have an unknown origin.

EU importers of lighting chains and decorative seasonal lighting (notably from China), EU distributors and retailers of lighting chains, EU online marketplaces listing third-party lighting chains (Amazon, eBay, Allegro, Cdiscount), and brands WONDER and XWATT must immediately check stock and listings against the 9 alerted products, pull test reports and technical files against EN 60598-1 and EN 60598-2-20 and the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, and withdraw non-compliant units, or the chains are recalled from end users, withdrawn and banned from sale, and authorities can impose national penalties for placing unsafe electrical equipment on the EU market.

  • Window : October 2, 2026 to October 2, 2026
  • Alerts : 9 alerts, 9 serious, all notified by Hungary
  • Risk : electric shock from insufficient insulation, accessible live parts, missing strain relief and non-compliant mains plugs
  • Product family : Lighting chains (8 lighting chains, 1 decorative lighting)
  • Legal basis : Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, with EN 60598-1 and EN 60598-2-20 cited on 8 of the 9 alerts
  • Official source : EU Safety Gate alert SR/02748/26

The pattern

All 9 alerts describe the same defect family. The products lack sufficient insulation, so live parts are accessible. Several also lack strain relief, allow single-pole plug insertion, or use a mains plug that fails dimensional requirements. Two alerts add that the chain is not protected against moisture although it is recommended for outdoor use. One cites EN 60598-2-4 with EN 60598-1 and EN 60598-2-20. One cites EN 60598 only, on a controller box without strain relief. Every alert states non-compliance with the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU.

Hungary is the only notifying country. Named brands are WONDER (2 alerts) and XWATT (1). Six alerts are unbranded. Seven measures combine a recall from end users, market withdrawal and a sales ban. One is a recall and withdrawal. The XWATT measure is a withdrawal and sales ban. The sweep fits Chinese lighting chains failing insulation and plug rules under the Low Voltage Directive and EN 60598-2-20.

Who is exposed

Exposure follows placement on the EU market, not the Hungarian notification. Importers of lighting chains and decorative seasonal lighting, notably from China, distributors and retailers of Christmas and seasonal chains, and online marketplaces listing third-party chains (Amazon, eBay, Allegro, Cdiscount) are in scope. Brands WONDER and XWATT are named on the alerts. Other brands and unbranded chains of the same construction are in the same regime when placed on the EU market.

What to check now

  • Match warehouse stock and online listings to the 9 Safety Gate notices of October 2, 2026, including unbranded chains and the WONDER and XWATT lines.
  • Pull supplier test reports for insulation, accessible live parts, mechanical strain relief and mains-plug dimensions against EN 60598-1 and EN 60598-2-20.
  • For chains sold for outdoor use, check moisture protection: two alerts failed that point as well as insulation and plug dimensions.
  • Review the technical file and the EU declaration of conformity under the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, including CE marking and the cited standards.
  • Withdraw non-compliant units from sale. Where the measure is a recall from end users, start that recall. Where the measure includes a sales ban, stop the listing.
  • Ask marketplace sellers for the same test reports and conformity file before a listing stays up.

Monitoring surfaces this Safety Gate wave when the alerts publish.
