EU Safety Gate posted 57 serious electric-shock alerts on USB chargers and power adaptors between 18 and 25 September 2026, 50 of them notified by Hungary in a coordinated market-surveillance sweep. The common defect is inadequate insulation between the primary and secondary circuits, which can leave the USB port live under mains voltage; 54 of the 57 products originate in China.

EU importers and distributors of USB chargers from China, the online marketplaces listing them into the EU (Amazon, AliExpress, Temu) and the repeat-offender brands EZRA (5 alerts), ORIGINAL (5), TREQA (4) and KAKUSIGA (3) must immediately check stock and incoming consignments against the 57 alerted products, pull supplier insulation test reports and verify the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU technical files and EN 60335-1 conformity, or face the measures already ordered across the wave: withdrawal from the market, recall from end users, sales bans and import rejection.

The pattern

The alerts point to one defect. In 22 alerts the danger text is identical: inadequate insulation between the primary and secondary circuits leaves the USB port live under mains voltage, risking electric shock. 37 alerts describe the same failure, and 51 of the 57 cite EN 60335-1. The Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU is named in 56 of the 57 alerts, the General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 in one.

The wave is concentrated: 50 were notified by Hungary, signalling a coordinated sweep on low-cost USB chargers; six Member States and the United Kingdom in respect of Northern Ireland notified one each. 54 of the 57 products originate in China, one in Tuerkiye, one in Vietnam and one is of unknown origin. The root cause is a systemic low-cost-charger manufacturing defect, not a single faulty batch.

The actors who must act are the EU importers and distributors placing USB chargers and power adaptors from China on the Union market, and the online marketplaces (Amazon, AliExpress, Temu) that list them into the EU. Four brands recur: EZRA (5 alerts), ORIGINAL (5), TREQA (4) and KAKUSIGA (3). Retailers, sellers and brand owners must trace listings to the supplier lots named in the alerts. The notifying authorities are the enforcers, not the exposed actors.

What to check now

  • Check stock, online listings and incoming consignments against the 57 alerted products, batch by batch.
